Model of the geological relief
This unique model of a cut through the mountains Spaargebirge in Meißen and the hill Fuchsberg in Weinböhla shows a geological profile of the basin – shaped region around the Elbe valley. The model is made of the twelve different types of rock which can be found in the valley.
Location: rest area near the restaurant Laubenschlösschen at Moritzburger Strasse
The profile shows a geological peculiarity –the Lausitzer Überschiebung
The term Lausitzer Überschiebung refers an overlapping of two geological layers. During the geological era Tertiary, immense tectonic powers caused a massive rock plate of granite and syenite from the area Lausitz to move above sedimentations from the Cretaceous period in the Elbe valley thereby creating a vertical rock formation covered with syenite.
